Vitrectomy Surgery

A vitrectomy is a surgery to remove the vitreous, the clear, jelly-like substance that fills the inside of your eye. The vitreous is attached to the retina, the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of your eye.

During a vitrectomy, your surgeon removes the vitreous through a small incision in your eye. They may also treat other conditions of the retina at the same time, such as diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration.

A vitrectomy can be done as an outpatient procedure, which means you won’t have to stay in the hospital overnight. The surgery usually takes about an hour. You may need to wear an eye patch for a few days after the surgery.

What are the risks of vitrectomy?

There are several risks associated with vitrectomy, including:

  • Bleeding: Vitrectomy involves making small incisions in the eye, which can result in bleeding.
  • Infection: There is a risk of infection associated with any surgery.
  • Retinal detachment: This is a rare complication but can occur after vitrectomy.
  • Vision loss: Although most people experience an improvement in vision after vitrectomy, some people may experience vision loss.

Types of Vitrectomy

There are three types of vitrectomy: pars plana, transconjunctival, and scleral-fixated.

Pars plana vitrectomy is the most common type of vitrectomy. It is performed through a small incision in the white part of the eye called the conjunctiva. The surgeon inserts a small instrument called a vitrector into the eye and removes the vitreous gel.

Transconjunctival vitrectomy is performed through a small incision in the conjunctiva. The surgeon inserts a small instrument called a transcon cutter into the eye and cuts away the vitreous gel.

Scleral-fixated vitrectomy is performed through a small incision in the sclera, the white part of the eye. The surgeon inserts a small instrument called a scleral fixator into the eye and removes the vitreous gel.

Vitrectomy Surgery Cost

The cost of vitrectomy surgery can vary depending on the type of surgery required, the surgeon performing the procedure, and the facility where the surgery is being performed. The average cost of vitrectomy surgery is between Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 70,000. However, this cost can increase or decrease depending on the factors mentioned above.

Happy Patients after Vitrectomy from Mantracare

Rishi Sachdeva

“Thank you so much for the vitrectomy surgery performed by MantraCare Eye Doctors. Prior to my surgery, I had suffered from poor vision and a detached retina. This was causing me severe pain and discomfort, as well as impairing my ability to work or participate in daily activities. The surgery went extremely smoothly, and within a few days, my vision was restored and I was feeling better than ever before. “
