Penetrating keratoplasty (PK), Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK), Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), and superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) are the most common types of corneal transplants performed in Mumbai.

PK is the most common type of transplant surgery and involves removing the upper layer of the eye’s surface, including the cornea. This procedure is often used to restore vision in people who have lost their eyesight due to diseases like cataracts or glaucoma. DSEK is a similar type of surgery that removes only the lower layer of the eye’s surface, which is important because it allows better oxygen and nutrient delivery to the remaining parts of the eye. DMEK replaces part or all of a person’s damaged descemet membrane, which plays an important role in maintaining fluid balance and preventing infection in the eye. DALK repairs damage to one or more layers of a person’s cornea caused by age, injury, or disease. SALK is a less common type of surgery that corrects problems with just one layer of a person’s cornea.
