Types of Vitrectomy

There are three main types of vitrectomy: pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV), and endoscopic subretinal or epiretinal approach.

PPV is the most common type of vitrectomy and is performed through a small incision in the lower eyelid.

TSV is a less invasive surgery that uses a thin, flexible tube to enter the eye and cut into the retina. The surgeon then removes the affected eye’s vitreous without using stitches or glue.

The endoscopic subretinal or epiretinal approach is an alternative to TSV that uses a small camera and telescope to allow the surgeon to access and remove the vitreous without entering the eye.
