Types of Vitrectomy

Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is the most common type of vitrectomy, and it is performed using a small incision in front of the eye. The surgeon uses a telescope to view the eye’s interior and removes excess fluid and debris from the macula.

Transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV) is a less common type of vitrectomy that uses no stitches or sutures. The surgeon makes an incision just below the lower eyelid and inserts a telescope through the opening. The telescope allows the physician to see into the eye and remove excess fluid and debris from the macula.

Endoscopic subretinal or epiretinal approach is a less common type of vitrectomy that uses an endoscope to view the inner surface of the eye. This approach is usually used when there is suspicion that there is damage to the retina or when there is difficulty accessing the macula with other types of vitrectomies.
