Keratoplasty /Cornea Transplant Surgery in Bhagalpur

There are many types of corneal transplant surgeries, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Penetrating keratoplasty (PK), Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK/ DSAEK), Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) are the most common types of corneal transplants. 

PK is a surgery that replaces the damaged or diseased central portion of the cornea with an artificial device. It is typically used in patients who have lost their sight due to advanced age or a refractive error such as myopia. DSEK and DSAEK are similar to PK, but they also remove the outer layer of the cornea called the epithelium. This allows for better healing and less chance of rejection. DMEK is a rare type of surgery that replaces only part of the damaged or diseased cornea. It is most often used in patients who have lost their central vision due to a complication from another type of surgery such as SALK or DALK. 

SALK is a more complicated procedure than DMEK and it requires that the patient remain overnight in the hospital after surgery. DMEK is also more expensive than SALK. Finally, DALK is a simpler procedure than either DSEK or DMEK, but it is not as effective in restoring vision. It is most often used in patients who have a very thin cornea or who are at risk for rejection of a DSEK or DMEK transplant.
