Cornea Transplant / Keratoplasty In Bhilai

A cornea transplant is a surgical procedure to replace a diseased or damaged cornea with a healthy one. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. It helps focus light into the eye and plays an important role in vision.

Corneal transplants are also called keratoplasty. There are different types of keratoplasty, depending on the amount of cornea that is replaced. Corneal transplants can be used to treat a variety of conditions that cause vision loss, including Fuch’s dystrophy, Corneal scarring, Keratoconus, Infections.

Types of Corneal Transplant Surgeries

There are a variety of types of corneal transplants available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Penetrating keratoplasty (PK), Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK/ DSAEK), Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), and superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) are all common types of corneal transplant surgery.

PK is the most commonly performed type of corneal transplant surgery. It involves using a small sharp object called a scissor blade to cut through the outer layer of the cornea, known as the stroma. This creates a hole in the eye that can allow light to enter the eye again.

DSEK is similar to PK, but it uses a special tool called an automated punch device to create the hole in the stroma. This procedure is often used if PK doesn’t result in enough tears in the outer layer of the cornea.

DMEK is another common type of transplant surgery. It involves removing part of the Descemet membrane, which covers the surface of the eye and helps protect it from infection and other damage. The removed membrane is then replaced with artificial material, usually silicon rubber or collagen gel.

DALK is a newer type of transplant surgery that uses a special tool to remove the outer layer of the cornea, known as the epithelium. This procedure is often used if DSEK or DMEK doesn’t result in enough tears in the outer layer of the cornea.

SALK is a newer type of transplant surgery that involves removing part of the stroma, which is the middle layer of the cornea. This procedure is often used if DALK doesn’t result in enough tears in the outer layer of the cornea.SALK is the least common type of transplant surgery and is only performed in very rare cases.
