Cornea Transplant / Keratoplasty In Bhiwandi

A cornea transplant, also called keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or diseased cornea with a healthy one from a donor. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped outer surface of the eye that covers the iris and pupil. A successful cornea transplant can improve vision, often dramatically. It is one of the most successful transplants performed today. In fact, more than 55,000 cornea transplants are performed each year in the India alone.

Types of Corneal Transplant Surgeries

There are many types of corneal transplant surgeries, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Percussive Keratoplasty (PK), also known as penetrating keratoplasty, is the most common type of corneal transplant surgery. In PK, the surgeon uses a blade to make a small hole in the cornea. This allows liquid to enter the eye and destroy the damaged cells.

Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK/ DSAEK) is a less-invasive version of PK. In DSEK, the surgeon makes a tiny slit in the cornea using a microscope. Then, they use special tools to remove small pieces of Descemet’s membrane (the layer that covers the eyeball). This reduces the chance of rejection.

Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) is another less-invasive option. In DMEK, the surgeon places a tiny tube over the incision made in PK or DSEK. The tube collects debris and fluid from inside the eye. This helps prevent rejection later on.

Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) is a more advanced procedure than either PK or DSEK. In DALK, the surgeon removes all of the outer layers of skin and fat from around your eyes. This leaves only Descemet’s membrane intact.DALK is less likely to cause rejection because there are no blood vessels in the outer layers of your eyes for the body to attack. In some cases, DALK can be used to treat corneal dystrophies that PK and DSEK cannot.
