Cornea Transplant / Keratoplasty In India

Transplanting a cornea is an important surgery for people with eye conditions like keratoconus and advanced age. The surgery uses a donor cornea, which is cut from someone else’s eye and then implanted into the patient’s eye.

There are a few different types of cornea transplants, but the most common is a stromal keratoplasty. This type of transplant uses healthy tissue from the donor’s eye to replace the damaged or lost cornea in the patient’s eye. There are several benefits to undergoing a cornea transplant. First, it can correct vision problems that result from keratoconus or other conditions that damage the cornea. Second, it can restore sight to patients who have lost their vision due to age or another disease. And finally, it can improve someone’s quality of life by giving them back their ability to see clearly and comfortably.

Types of Corneal Transplant Surgeries

There are many types of corneal transplant surgeries, each with its own benefits and risks. Penetrating keratoplasty (PK), Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK/ DSAEK), Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) and artificial cornea transplant (keratoprosthesis) are all common procedures used to restore sight in people who have lost their eyesight due to injury or disease.

PK is the most common type of corneal transplant surgery, performed in approximately two-thirds of cases. PK involves removing the damaged portion of the cornea and replacing it with an artificial membrane. This procedure is usually successful in restoring vision, although there can be some residual distortion of the pupil. DSEK and DSAEK are similar to PK, but also involve the removal of the stromal layer around the eye – this can help to improve transparency and reduce scarring. DMEK is a less common type of surgery that replaces only the endothelium layer of the cornea. SALK is a more recent option that uses a combination of DSEK and DMEK techniques to improve outcomes.

All other types of corneal transplant surgery have been shown to be effective in restoring vision in people with corneal damage. However, each type of surgery has its own risks and benefits that should be considered by both the patient and the surgeon before deciding on the best course of treatment. Artificial cornea transplants are usually only considered when all other options have failed.
