Keratoplasty /Cornea Transplant Surgery in Gandhinagar

There are a variety of types of corneal transplant surgeries that can restore vision in patients who have lost their sight. The most common type of corneal transplant is penetrating keratoplasty, which is also known as PK. This surgery uses a surgical knife to remove part of the donor’s eye and replace it with the patient’s eye. The other types of corneal transplant surgeries include Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK) and Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK).

 DSEK and DMEK both use a small incision on the outside of the eye to access the donor tissue. Then, surgeons use special instruments to remove the damaged tissue inside the eye. After healing, these procedures create a new surface on the inside of your eye where you can see. Superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) is another type of corneal transplant surgery that uses a smaller incision than DSEK or DMEK. SALK does not require the removal of any tissue from the donor’s eye. Instead, it uses special tools to make tiny cuts in the front layer of your own eye. These cuts allow surgeons to insert artificial lenses into your eyes without taking away any natural vision. Finally, an artificial Cornea Transplant (Keratoprosthesis) is a newer type of surgery that may be used when other types of transplant surgery cannot be done. In this type of surgery, the surgeon will insert a new artificial eye made from either plastic or ceramic materials into the patient’s eye.
