Types of Vitrectomy

There are three main types of vitrectomy: pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV), and endoscopic subretinal or epiretinal approach.

PPV is the most common type of vitrectomy. It is performed through a small incision in the lower eyelid, just above the iris. The surgeon uses a laser to cut out the damaged area of the retina.

TSV is similar to PPV, but it uses dissolvable sutures instead of laser cuts. TSV is usually more comfortable and less invasive than PPV.

The endoscopic subretinal or epiretinal approach is the least common type of vitrectomy. It is done using an endoscope that goes through the eye into the retina. The surgeon then removes the damaged area of the retina with a special cautery tool. This approach can be difficult to perform and may require specialized training.
