Cornea Transplant / Keratoplasty In Gurgaon

A cornea transplant, also called a keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or diseased cornea with a healthy one from a donor. The cornea is the clear, central portion of the eye’s outer layer. It helps focus light onto the retina, which is the back of the eye where an image is formed.

Cornea transplants are performed to treat corneal diseases that cause vision loss. These include keratoconus, corneal edema, corneal dystrophies, and certain infections. A transplant may also be needed if you have a previous transplant that failed or was rejected by your body.

Cornea transplants can restore vision. In fact, they’re responsible for restoring sight to more than 55,000 people each year in India alone. Most people who have a transplant experience an improvement in vision. If you’re considering a cornea transplant, talk to your doctor in Gurgaon about the risks and benefits.

Types of Corneal Transplant Surgeries

There are a variety of types of corneal transplant surgeries, all of which have their own benefits and drawbacks. The most common type of corneal transplant surgery is the penetrating keratoplasty (PK), in which the surgeon removes a small piece of healthy tissue from the donor eye and transplants it into the patient’s damaged eye. PK is generally considered to be the safest and most effective type of corneal transplant surgery, although it can also be quite expensive.

Another popular type of corneal transplant surgery is the deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), which is usually less invasive than PK and tends to result in better vision than PK. DALK involves removing a larger piece of tissue from the donor eye and then stitching it into place in the patient’s damaged eye.

DSEK is a variant of DALK that uses smaller instruments and does not require as much tissue from the donor eye, making it less invasive but also resulting in poorer vision than DALK.

The final type of corneal transplant surgery is the deep middle lamellar keratoplasty (DMEK), which is similar to DSEK but more invasive. DMEK involves removing more tissue from the donor eye than either DALK or DSEK, which can give better results but also poses greater risks.
