Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) is a newer type of transplant that offers some advantages over traditional PK and DSEK procedures. In DMEK, instead of removing the damaged layer of cells from the inside of the eye, the surgeon carefully removes only the damaged layer of tissue called the descemet’s membrane. This leaves behind a healthy layer of cells that can help support the new implant. DMEK is often done as an outpatient operation and can take about one hour to complete.

Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) is a type of corneal transplant that is used to treat certain types of cornea damage. In DALK, the surgeon removes the front surface of the eye’s damaged cornea and replaces it with an artificial implant. DALK is usually done as an outpatient operation and takes about two hours to complete.

Superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) is a type of corneal transplant that is used to treat certain types of cornea damage. In SALK, the surgeon removes only the outermost layer of the eye’s damaged cornea and leaves the inner layers intact. SALK is usually done as an outpatient operation and takes about one hour to complete.

Artificial Cornea Transplant (Keratoprosthesis) is a type of transplant that is used to treat certain types of cornea damage. In an artificial cornea transplant, the surgeon removes the eye’s damaged cornea and replaces it with an artificial implant. The most common type of artificial cornea is the Boston Keratoprosthesis, which is made from surgical plastic. Artificial cornea transplants are usually done as outpatient operations and can take about two hours to complete.
