Types of Vitrectomy

There are three types of vitrectomies: pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV), and endoscopic subretinal or epiretinal approach.

PPV is the most common type of vitrectomy and is performed through a small incision in the lower eyelid. The surgeon makes a hole in the cornea using a microscope and then removes the diseased vitreous humor by pushing it out through the hole. PPV is considered to be the safest type of surgery because there is very little risk of damaging other tissues in the eye.

TSV is similar to PPV but uses small, thin instruments to break up and remove the diseased vitreous humor. TSV has less risk of damaging the eye but can be more difficult to perform due to its smaller incision size.

Endoscopic subretinal or epiretinal approach is another type of vitrectomy that uses tiny cameras and surgical instruments inserted through tiny holes in the eyes’ surface layer (epithelium). This type of surgery was initially developed for people who have advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or who have a detached retina but can also be used for other types of eye diseases. The surgeon navigates these tiny tools directly into the innermost
