Keratoplasty /Cornea Transplant Surgery in Kolkata

There are many types of corneal transplant surgeries, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. Penetrating keratoplasty (PK), Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK/ DSAEK), Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) and artificial cornea transplant (Keratoprosthesis) are all common procedures used to replace a damaged or lost cornea.

PK is a procedure that uses a small surgical knife to make a hole in the front surface of the eye. The surgeon then inserts a thin metal device called a stent into the opening, which helps restore the normal shape and function of the eye. DSEK and DSAEK are similar procedures, but the metal stent in DSEK is larger and is inserted through a smaller opening in the eye. DMEK is similar to DSEK, but instead of using a metal stent, it uses a mesh support structure to help hold the new cornea in place. DALK is similar to DMEK, but instead of using mesh, it uses strips of collagen to stabilize the new cornea. SALK is a less common procedure than PK, DSEK, DSAEK, and DALK. SALK uses small bubbles of air to hold the new cornea in place. Finally, keratoprosthesis is a newer procedure that uses an artificial cornea made of flexible plastic and metal.
