Vitrectomy Surgery In Kolkata

Vitrectomy is a surgical procedure that is used to remove a vitreous tumor, and sometimes the surrounding vitreous. The tumor can be benign or malignant. Malignant tumors are more likely to spread to other parts of the body and may require treatment with radiation or chemotherapy. Benign tumors are less likely to spread and may be removed without treatment.

During vitrectomy surgery, the surgeon uses a special microscope to enter the eye through the pupil and remove the tumor or cancerous cells. The surgeon then removes the empty vitreous cavity by cutting it out with a special tool called a curette. This leaves behind a clear window in the retina that allows light to enter and see clearly again.

Types of Vitrectomy

There are three main types of vitrectomy: pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV), and endoscopic subretinal or epiretinal approach.

PPV is the most common type of vitrectomy, and it is performed through a small incision in the lower eyelid.

TSV is a less commonly used technique that uses sutures to close the wound beneath the eye.

The endoscopic subretinal or epiretinal approach is a newer technique that uses an endoscope to enter the eye through the iris and then into the retina.
