Cornea Transplant / Keratoplasty In Mangalore
A cornea transplant, also known as keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace the damaged or diseased cornea with a healthy one from a donor.
Mangalore is one of the leading centers for this life-changing surgery in India. The Cornea is the clear, dome-shaped outermost layer of the eye. It covers the iris and pupil and helps focus light into the eye. A healthy cornea is necessary for clear vision. When it becomes diseased or damaged, it can cause pain, blurred vision, and even blindness.
In Mangalore, this surgery is performed by some of the leading surgeons in the country who have years of experience in performing this delicate procedure. The success rate of cornea transplants has been steadily increasing over the years and today, more than 90% of all transplants are successful in restoring vision.
Types of Corneal Transplant Surgeries
There are many types of corneal transplant surgeries, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Penetrating keratoplasty (PK), Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK/ DSAEK), Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), and superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) are the most common types of corneal transplants.
PK is a type of surgery in which the surgeon removes a small piece of central cornea and replaces it with an artificial lens. DSEK/ DSAEK is a more severe type of PK in which the entire central cornea is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. DMEK is a less severe version of DSEK/ DSAEK in which only the peripheral layer of the central cornea is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. DALK is a more advanced form of DMEK in which all the layers of the central cornea are removed and replaced with an artificial lens. SALK is a less advanced form of DALK in which only the outer layer of the central cornea is removed and replaced with an artificial lens.
PK, DSEK/ DSAEK, DMEK, and SALK are all performed using general anesthesia. However, DALK requires local anesthesia near the eye due to the more invasive nature of the surgery. The different types of corneal transplant surgeries have different risks and benefits. Some of the risks associated with corneal transplant surgery include infection, rejection of the transplant, and glaucoma.

Happy Patients from Mangalore after Corneal Transplant / Keratoplasty
“I was born with a short cornea which left me with poor vision. I had been living with my condition for more than 20 years and finally decided to get a corneal transplant surgery. The day of the surgery, I came across this company online. They did a fantastic job and their work was worth every penny.”
