Keratoplasty /Cornea Transplant Surgery in Patna

There are a variety of different types of corneal transplant surgeries, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. Penetrating keratoplasty (PK), which is the most common type of surgery, involves cutting into the cornea and removing part of the inside layer. Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK/DSAEK), also known as descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty, involves removing the endothelium—the thin layer of cells that lines the inside of the eye—from the surface of the cornea. Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), which is more recently developed, removes only the membranous portion of the endothelium, preserving its ability to produce aqueous humor. 

Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), which is typically used in cases where PK or DSEK isn’t an option because of infection or severe astigmatism, makes several cuts into the cornea and then uses a balloon to push out the damaged tissue. Superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK), which is usually used in cases where DALK isn’t an option because of severe astigmatism, makes fewer cuts and uses a lasers to heat up and expand the stroma—the middle layer of cells that covers Bowman’s layer—so that the damaged tissue can be removed.
