DALK is a procedure in which the surgeon removes the outer layer of the cornea, known as the epithelium, and the inner layer, known as the endothelium. The middle layer, known as the stroma, is then removed. The advantage of DALK is that it preserves the endothelium, which is responsible for pumping fluid out of the cornea. This results in a lower risk of rejection and fewer postoperative complications. However, DALK can be more difficult to perform than other types of transplants and often requires a longer recovery time.

SALK is similar to DALK in that the epithelium and endothelium are preserved. However, only a part of the stroma is removed. The advantage of SALK is that it is less invasive than other types of transplants and often results in a quicker recovery time. However, there is a risk of partial rejection, in which the body rejects only part of the transplant.

Keratoprosthesis is an artificial cornea that is implanted into the eye. This procedure is typically reserved for patients who have failed other types of transplants or who have a very high risk of rejection. The advantage of keratoprosthesis is that it does not require donor tissue. However, there is a risk of infection and other complications.
