Types of Vitrectomy

There are three primary types of vitrectomy: pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV), and endoscopic subretinal or epiretinal approach.

PPV is the most common type of vitrectomy and involves making a hole in the middle of the eye’s transparent cornea using a microscope. The surgeon then inserts a long, thin tube called a cannula into the opening and uses suction to remove the vitreous gel.

TSV is similar to PPV but instead of making a hole in the cornea, the surgeon makes several small punctures in its surface. This technique allows more access to the underlying retina, which makes it easier to remove debris and restore sight.

Endoscopic subretinal or epiretinal approach is less commonly used than PPV or TSV but offers some advantages over them. First, it is an outpatient procedure that can be done with minimal sedation. Second, because it is performed through a tiny incision near the eye’s edge, there is less risk of damage to the surrounding structures. Finally, because it is an epiretinal approach, it does not require the removal of any tissue from within the eye.
