Cornea Transplant / Keratoplasty In Sirsa

The cornea is the clear front window of the eye. It helps us see and protects our eyes from damage. If your cornea is damaged, you may not be able to see as well as you used to, or you may need surgery to replace the cornea.

There are many options for surgery to repair or replace a cornea. The most common type of surgery is a corneal transplant. In a corneal transplant, an outer layer of the eye called the epithelium is removed and replaced with donor tissue. This procedure can restore vision to people who have lost their eyesight due to conditions like glaucoma, a serious eye disease, or age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which can cause blindness in one or both eyes.

If you’re interested in having a corneal transplant or would like more information about this procedure, please contact the Mantracare Sirsa office for more information.

Types of Corneal Transplant Surgeries

There are several types of corneal transplant surgeries, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Penetrating keratoplasty (PK), Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK/ DSAEK), Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) are all types of artificial cornea transplant surgeries.

  • PK is a popular surgery because it is relatively simple and can be done under local anesthetic with little risk of complications. However, PK requires that the donor cornea be thin and healthy, which presents a challenge in some cases.
  • DSEK is a more advanced procedure that uses a smaller incision and offers better vision than PK. DSEK has the disadvantage of requiring a much larger donor cornea, which may not be available in some cases.
  • DMEK is similar to DSEK but uses a plastic mesh to support the donor cornea during healing.
  • DALK is a newer procedure that uses an endoscope to remove the damaged layer of the eye tissues directly below the iris before proceeding with grafting.
  • SALK is less common than the other surgeries described above but has the advantage of being performed on patients who have mild to moderate degrees of astigmatism.
