There are many types of corneal transplant surgeries, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. Here are the three most common types:

Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK) is the most common type of corneal transplant surgery. It involves removing the damaged outer layer of the eye’s cornea with a thin, sharp knife called a keratome. The remaining healthy, inner layer of the cornea is then patched together using special stitches. This type of surgery is usually successful in restoring vision to people who have lost their sight due to a variety of causes, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and other conditions.

Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK/ DSAEK) is another popular type of transplant surgery. It works similarly to PK surgery, but instead of patching together the healthy inner layer of the cornea, DSEK/ DSAEK removes all or part of the damaged outer layer. This leaves the patient with a clear central portion that needs to be treated like any other natural lens – by wearing eyeglasses and keeping them clean. Because this procedure can remove more tissue than PK surgery, it may be less successful in restoring vision to people who have lost their sight from conditions like AMD.

Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK/ DSAEK) is the newest and most advanced type of transplant surgery. It’s very similar to DSEK/ DSAEK, but instead of removing all of the damaged outer layers of the cornea, DMEK/ DSAEK only removes a thin layer called the Descemet’s membrane. This leaves the patient with an even thinner layer of tissue that needs to be treated like any other natural lens. Because this procedure is less invasive than PK surgery, it has a higher success rate in restoring vision to people who have lost their sight from conditions like AMD.
