Cornea Transplant / Keratoplasty In Warangal
A cornea transplant, also known as keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or diseased cornea with a healthy one from a donor. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped tissue at the front of the eye that helps focus light into the retina. A transplant may be needed if your cornea becomes scarred from conditions such as injuries, infections, or other diseases.
Cornea transplants are usually successful and can improve vision in most people. In fact, more than 55,000 transplants are performed each year in the United States alone. However, it’s important to keep in mind that this surgery is complex and takes time to heal. It’s also possible that you may need additional surgery down the road.
If you live in Warangal and are considering a cornea transplant, it’s important to find an experienced surgeon who has performed this type of surgery before. Dr. Shweta Jain is a board-certified ophthalmologist who has extensive experience with cornea transplants and other eye surgeries.
Types of Corneal Transplant Surgeries
There are several different types of corneal transplant surgeries, each with its own specific benefits and drawbacks. Penetrating keratoplasty (PK), Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK/ DSAEK), Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), and superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) are all types of corneal transplants that replace the damaged or defective cornea with an artificial implant.
PK is the most common type of corneal transplant surgery, performed in approximately 80 percent of all cases. PK involves removing the damaged or defective outer layer of the cornea using a blade called a microkeratome, then attaching the artificial implant to the remaining healthy tissue. This procedure is usually done as an outpatient procedure, and patients typically recover within one week. However, PK has a low success rate – only about 60 to 70 percent of patients achieve good vision after surgery.
DSEK/ DSAEK is a more advanced type of transplant surgery that was first developed in the late 1990s. DSEK/ DSAEK involves removing not just the outer layer of the cornea but also part of the underlying stroma – an outer layer of fibrous connective tissue that forms around other organs in the body. This extra step allows for a thinner, more delicate artificial implant to be used, which results in better vision for patients after surgery. DSEK/ DSAEK has a success rate of about 80 to 90 percent.
DMEK is the newest and most advanced type of corneal transplant surgery. DMEK involves removing only the very outermost layer of the cornea, called the endothelium. This layer is only about 10 microns thick – about one-third the thickness of human hair. DMEK has a success rate of about 95 percent, making it the most successful type of corneal transplant surgery available today.
DALK and SALK are two older types of transplant surgery that are not performed as often as they once were. DALK involves removing the entire outer layer of the cornea, and SALK involves making a partial incision in the cornea to remove the damaged or defective tissue. Both procedures have a success rate of about 60 to 70 percent.
